Shapes: Straight, tuck, star Rolling Travelling Levels

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

To begin to understand the basic shapes To learn basic rolling movements Begin to understand how to travel on hands and feet

LESSON 1 - SET UP/ACTIVITY CIRCUIT Set up two identical circuits. Split children into equal groups and aim to have a maximum of five children to start on each activity. Ensure enough mats are used for each activity to create sufficient space for the children to practice (approx. 3m x 2m). Children should spend around 3 minutes on the activity before moving to the next one. Once all three activities are completed, repeat the circuit

PULSE RAISER (BEGINNING OF LESSON)

SHAPES

1.Children scatter around and between equipment setups, leaving ample space 2.Introduce the "shape safari adventure" for exploring wild shapes in the jungle 3.Reveal the three shapes: straight, tuck, star 4.Practice each shape multiple times in different positions for recognition Begin with a walk (slow like elephants). Appoint a leader to lead the warm-up, and the rest follow in a line, weaving around and between mats 5. While walking, call out one of the three shapes (e.g., "We've found a straight shape!”) 6. 7.Prompt children to stop and perform the called shape Transition to pulse-raising animal-inspired exercises (e.g., march like rhinos, jump like kangaroos, sprint fast on the spot like cheetahs) 8. 9.Introduce another shape, and children stop to perform it Repeat each shape numerous times, adjusting based on the lesson duration, and include various animal-inspired pulse raiser exercises for engagement 10.

Rock and roll on bench to stand up with feet either side of the bench A RECEPTION - LESSON 1 - ACTIVITIES 1

Adaptations

Start in tuck shape on the bench 1. Knees together and rock backwards with one hand on each knee 2. Rock forwards to stand up with feet either side of the bench 3.

You can use additional mats either side of the bench for smaller children

2

Log rolls along the mats holding a bean bag

Increase difficulty? Try to not let arms or feet touch the mats

Legs together and straight 1. Arms straight by ears holding a bean bag 2. Initiate the start of roll by tipping feet across first 3.

3

Straddle spider walking sideways along mats there and back

Move hands and feet along the mats sideways 1. Keep moving along step by step from one end to the other 2. Keep legs straight throughout 3.

S RECEPTION - LESSON 1 - SEQUENCES Sequences give the children an opportunity to combine what they've learnt in the lesson. Children are free to use ideas from the pulse raiser and the activities in this lesson, as well as those from other lessons, in any order they prefer. Remember, sequences can be done individually, in pairs, or in small groups. The children can use the example below or create their own sequence.
